Method:
- Hold the thumb of your left hand in the fist of your right hand.
- Touch the tip of your right thumb to the tip of your left index finger (or the largest middle finger).
- Keep the other four fingers of your left hand together.
- When both hands are joined in this manner, they form the shape of a conch shell (Shankh).
- This can also be done with the opposite hands.
Before or while doing this mudra, chant the sound “Om” for a while and then feel the resonance within yourself. This practice can be done for a long duration.
Benefits:
- Just as the sound of a conch (Shankhnaad) opens the doors of temples to the deities, performing this mudra can help open the inner doors within ourselves.
- This mudra has a significant impact on the throat and other glands located in the throat area. It helps alleviate throat disorders, heals vocal cords, enhances speech quality, and makes the voice melodious. It also improves vocal power. Tonsils heal, and the thyroid and parathyroid glands are affected. Proper functioning of these glands influences the metabolic process.
- When the metabolism is balanced, it positively affects the navel and the surrounding organs. The Manipura Chakra, the energy center of our nervous system with 72,000 nerve channels, is activated, leading to improved digestion. The intestines become softer, and appetite increases. This mudra specifically benefits the lower abdomen, alleviating all disorders in that area.
- This mudra balances all five elements within the body and strengthens the nervous system.
Perform this mudra for 15 minutes, three times a day, for all types of throat diseases, digestive disorders, vocal cord issues, and thyroid gland problems. It is also suitable during prayer.
Precaution:
If you feel weak or gain weight due to practicing this mudra, discontinue it.
Special Note:
Shankh Mudra has incredible potential to enhance the power of words and speech, making it extremely beneficial for speakers and teachers.
If practiced daily for just five minutes, along with Ujjayi Pranayama and Simhasana (Lion Pose), Shankh Mudra can prevent throat diseases for life, eliminate all speech defects, and keep the thyroid gland healthy.
The pressure of the thumb inside the fist is applied to the center of the palm, and the pressure of the three fingers of the fist is applied to the Venus mount, pressing the center points in the palm corresponding to the navel and thyroid gland.
