Mudras for Diabetes: Simple Practices for Effective Blood Sugar Control

Diabetes is a chronic condition that can gradually weaken the entire body. To help prevent and manage diabetes, certain mudras can be beneficial. In addition to regular medical treatment, practicing specific mudras such as Surya Mudra, Prana Mudra, Apan Mudra, and a particular mudra for diabetes patients can aid in balancing the body’s systems and improving overall health.


Method to Practice the Mudra for Diabetes

1. First Position (Fist Pressure on the Navel)

  • Posture: Sit in Vajrasana (Diamond Pose). If sitting in Vajrasana is difficult, you can sit on a chair with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Action:
    • Close both hands into fists, with the thumbs inside.
    • Join the backs of both fists together and place them on the upper part of the navel.
    • Inhale deeply and, while exhaling, slowly lean forward to apply pressure on the stomach, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder with your fists.
    • Perform this motion 10-11 times.

2. Second Position (Fist Pressure Below the Navel)

  • Action: Now, place both fists together below the navel.
    • Inhale deeply and, while exhaling, lean forward again to apply pressure on the small intestine, bladder, uterus (in women), and large intestine.
    • Perform this 10-11 times.

3. Third Position (Gurud Mudra)

  • Action:
    • Place the left hand on the navel and the right hand diagonally over the left hand, crossing the thumbs. This forms the Gurud Mudra.
    • Inhale deeply, and while exhaling, lean forward to apply pressure on the navel.
    • Perform this 10-11 times.

Duration and Practice

  • Perform this entire sequence two to three times a day on an empty stomach, preferably an hour before meals.
  • Morning, afternoon, and evening are ideal times to practice.
  • If you are sitting in Vajrasana, make sure your buttocks touch your heels.

Benefits of this Mudra for Diabetes

Special Notes for Managing Diabetes

In addition to practicing the diabetes mudra, the following lifestyle changes and practices can support better management of diabetes:

1. Regular Exercise

  • One of the major causes of diabetes is prolonged sitting and lack of exercise. It is highly recommended for diabetes patients to walk 4-5 kilometers daily to improve circulation and manage blood sugar levels.

2. Post-Dinner Practices

  • After dinner, sit in Vajrasana for a while to aid digestion, then walk for at least 30 minutes. Walking in the evening is considered more beneficial than a morning walk.

3. Chewing Food Thoroughly

  • Chewing food thoroughly is crucial for diabetes management. Glucose begins to form in the mouth, which reduces the need for insulin and naturally decreases food intake, helping to manage blood sugar levels.

4. Additional Mudras

  • Along with the specific mudra for diabetes, Surya Mudra, Prana Mudra, and Apan Mudra are also beneficial for regulating the body’s energy flow and supporting pancreatic health.
