We have previously described several mudras for conditions such as colds, coughs, and asthma, including Surya Mudra, Kubera Mudra, and Shwasani Mudra. However, these mudras are not completely effective in alleviating dry cough. In northern India, during the winter months from November to February, mornings, evenings, and nights are very cold. However, during the day when the sun is out, it is not as cold, and there is bright sunshine. In this season, humidity is very low, and numerous germs and toxic elements accumulate in the atmosphere. This situation is extremely harmful to respiratory patients, especially for the throat and vocal cords. Even a slight cold can cause inflammation in the throat and voice passage. Our respiratory system needs warm, humid air, but the atmosphere is just the opposite during this season. As a result, dry cough occurs, which is not easily cured. To address this situation, we have created a new mudra.
Duration:
Practice this mudra for 15 minutes, three times a day.
Method:
- Form Surya Mudra: Bend the ring finger (fourth finger) so that its tip touches the base of the thumb.
- Then form Indra Mudra and Akash Mudra: Bring the tips of the middle finger, little finger, and thumb together.
- Perform this with both hands. There is no strict time limit for this practice.
Benefits:
- Surya Mudra helps to alleviate colds.
- Indra Mudra increases the water element in the body.
- The combination of Surya Mudra and Indra Mudra generates warmth and moisture in the respiratory system.
- Water and Fire Elements: The combination of water and fire elements creates steam, which soothes the throat.
- When there is inflammation (swelling) in the throat, there is a deficiency of the space element (Akash) in the throat. This deficiency causes persistent dry cough and a feeling of suffocation. The space element is directly related to the throat. Akash Mudra helps to increase the space element.
- Thus, practicing Akash Mudra, Indra Mudra, and Surya Mudra together provides significant relief to the throat.
Precautions:
- Practice this mudra only during the winter season. During the summer, do not perform Surya Mudra. Instead, only bring the tips of the little finger and middle finger to the tip of the thumb.
Special Notes:
- Gargling with warm salty water three to four times a day provides significant relief from throat ailments, as it provides both warmth and moisture to the throat. Along with this mudra, make sure to gargle with salt water because salt is antiseptic.
- Consuming a mixture of one teaspoon of turmeric powder and two teaspoons of honey two to three times a day can help cure dry cough.
By integrating these mudras and natural remedies into your daily routine, you can effectively manage dry cough, particularly during the winter months.
