Method:
Sit in Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose). Place your left hand in your lap with the palm facing upward. Rest your right hand on top of the left hand, also with the palm facing upward. Now, gently place the thumbs of both hands on top of each other. Alternatively, you can form Gyan Mudra with both hands, which creates the ‘Gyan Dhyana Mudra.’
Meaning:
This is the simplest and easiest mudra for meditation. By placing your hands in this position, you naturally feel peaceful, and both the mind and body become inactive.
Benefits:
- Calms the Nervous System: It relaxes the entire nervous system, reducing mental restlessness, irritability, unnecessary worry, overthinking, insomnia, nightmares, and anger, as well as alleviating all nervous system disorders.
- Balances Blood Pressure: It helps regulate both high and low blood pressure, normalizes heart rate, and strengthens the heart.
- Enhances Meditation: This mudra greatly benefits meditation practices, bringing stability and equanimity. It turns the mind inward, leading to a balanced, peaceful, and yogic state.
- Relieves Physical and Mental Disorders: Unknowingly, this mudra soothes both physical and mental disturbances, guiding the practitioner towards higher spiritual experiences.
- Divine Energy Flow: Once the mind and body are fully calm, divine energy begins to flow within, preparing the practitioner to experience a higher spiritual connection.
- Energy Cycle Creation: Typically, energy enters the body through the left hand and exits through the right hand. This is why blessings are given with the right hand. When one hand is placed on the other, it creates an energy cycle within the body, which helps release toxins and brings lightness to the body and mind. This mudra is well-known for inducing feelings of lightness and enthusiasm.
- Balances the Five Elements: This mudra helps balance the five elements within the body.
- Prana Balance: It balances pranic energy within the body.
- Energy Conservation: This mudra prevents prana energy from dissipating through the palms, keeping it within the body.
- Astonishing Effects on Body and Mind: It has remarkable effects on both the body and mind, promoting peace and stillness.
- Spiritual Powers: Gyan Mudra enhances Garima Shakti (the ability to increase body weight at will), while Dhyana Mudra gives Laghima Shakti (the ability to reduce body weight), leading to a sense of lightness and mental peace.
- Historical Significance: Lord Buddha used this mudra for meditation.
Duration: 15 minutes, three times a day.
